In this second issue of Pushing Out the Boat there is a wonderful
variety of writing, from the political satire of Ron Clerk to the seaside surrealism
of Maggie Wallis. Once again, as well as featuring writers from the Northeast we
are glad to welcome first-class work from further afield.
As editor I am particularly pleased that several writers are appearing in print
for the first time. It is an important function of literary magazines that they
should provide that first 'in' for talented new writers.
I am always impressed by the extent to which the weather and land/seascape influence
writers from this area. Once again these influences are strong in many of the pieces
featured here. Roddy Hamilton's "Nigg Bay Road" contains some beautiful descriptions
of the mist rolling in from the sea, while the fog inspires a poem in the Doric
from Eddie Davidson.
The magazine is immeasurably enhanced by artwork from artists working in the Northeast,
and I would like to thank the managing editor, Mindy Grewar for her attention to
detail and layout.
